Fanuc 540 - Spindle speed deviation

SPINDLE SPEED DEVIATION

Fanuc spindle alarm 540: SPINDLE SPEED DEVIATION. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 540 indicates the spindle motor cannot maintain commanded speed within acceptable tolerance limits. This deviation between commanded and actual spindle speed typically results from mechanical overload, drive system faults, feedback device issues, or speed loop parameter problems. The alarm protects the spindle system by halting operation when speed error exceeds the threshold defined in parameter settings.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access diagnostics screen and monitor spindle encoder signals (A, B, and Z phase) while manually rotating spindle. Verify clean square wave patterns without dropouts.

Disable spindle drive power before manual rotation

  2. 2

Inspect encoder cable connectors at both motor and drive ends for bent pins, corrosion, or loose connections. Reseat all connections firmly.

  3. 3

Check encoder mounting for excessive play or looseness. Verify encoder coupling is secure and gap between encoder disk and read head is within specification (typically 0.5-1.0mm).

  4. 4

If encoder signals are erratic or missing, clean encoder disk with lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol. Replace encoder if signals remain unstable or Z-phase is absent.

Use only approved cleaning materials to avoid damaging encoder disk coating
