Fanuc 5304 - Spindle Gear Change Error
Alarm 5304 occurs when the spindle gearbox fails to complete a gear shift within the programmed timeout period, or when the gear position confirmation signal does not match the commanded gear position. This is typically caused by mechanical binding in the gearbox, faulty gear position sensors, hydraulic/pneumatic actuation problems, or incorrect parameter settings for gear shift timing.
Fanuc 5304 - Spindle Gear Change Error
SPINDLE GEAR CHANGE ERROR
The spindle gear change operation failed to complete within the required time or the gear engagement confirmation signal was not received. The spindle gearbox did not successfully shift to the requested gear stage and the control cannot confirm gear engagement.
Root Cause Summary
Alarm 5304 occurs when the spindle gearbox fails to complete a gear shift within the programmed timeout period, or when the gear position confirmation signal does not match the commanded gear position. This is typically caused by mechanical binding in the gearbox, faulty gear position sensors, hydraulic/pneumatic actuation problems, or incorrect parameter settings for gear shift timing.
Safety
Causes and Fixes
Access the spindle gearbox and manually rotate the spindle in M19 orient mode. Observe the gear position indicator on the diagnostic screen (typically in PMC or I/O diagnostics under spindle signals GR1, GR2, etc.).
Check proximity switch signals X-addresses while manually cycling through each gear position. Verify each gear position produces a unique signal combination matching the parameter settings.
Lock out machine power before approaching spindle components. Verify zero rotational energy.
Inspect proximity switches for physical damage, correct mounting distance (typically 1-2mm gap), and secure wiring connections. Check for metal chip accumulation on sensor faces or target dogs.
Replace faulty proximity switches if signals are erratic or missing. Re-adjust sensor gap and verify correct signal pattern matches parameter 4020-4022 (gear position detection) configuration.
