Fanuc 531 - Spindle undervoltage

SPINDLE UNDERVOLTAGE

Fanuc spindle alarm 531: SPINDLE UNDERVOLTAGE. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 531 indicates the spindle drive has detected voltage below the acceptable threshold on the DC bus or input power supply. This typically occurs due to power supply issues, regenerative discharge problems, or drive module failures preventing proper voltage regulation to the spindle motor.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check incoming 3-phase power at the spindle drive input terminals using a multimeter. Verify all three phases are present and balanced (typically 200-230V or 380-480V depending on system).

HIGH VOLTAGE - Use proper PPE and lockout/tagout procedures

  2. 2

Inspect all power cables and connections from the main disconnect to the spindle drive for loose terminals, burnt connections, or damaged wiring.

  3. 3

Measure DC bus voltage at the spindle drive test points (typically 280-320VDC for 200V class or 530-650VDC for 400V class). If voltage is low, suspect power supply module failure.

HIGH VOLTAGE - Refer to drive manual for proper test point locations

  4. 4

Check for blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers on the spindle drive input power circuit. Replace fuses only after identifying root cause of failure.
