Fanuc Alarm 462 - n AXIS: SEND CNC DATA FAILED

Servo Alarm: Send CRC Error

Sending data from CNC to servo amplifier failed via FSSB. Check FSSB connections and optical fiber cable.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 462 indicates a communication failure between the CNC and servo amplifier over the FSSB (Fiber Servo Serial Bus) optical network. This occurs when the CNC attempts to send configuration data, parameters, or control commands to the amplifier but receives no acknowledgment or encounters a transmission error. The fault is typically related to physical FSSB connections, optical fiber integrity, or amplifier hardware failure.

Safety

  • Power down CNC system before disconnecting FSSB cables to prevent damage to optical transmitters
  • Handle fiber optic cables carefully - avoid sharp bends or crushing that can cause permanent damage
  • Use proper ESD precautions when handling servo amplifier boards
  • Ensure emergency stop is functional before testing servo communication
  • ⚠️ POWER DOWN CNC before disconnecting FSSB cables to prevent optical transmitter damage
  • ⚠️ Verify emergency stop functionality before testing servo communication
  • Ensure the machine is in a safe state before performing any troubleshooting steps. Use appropriate lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Be aware of potential pinch points and moving parts when working near the servo amplifiers and motors.
  • High voltages are present in the servo amplifier. Do not touch any internal components unless you are a qualified technician and have disconnected the power supply.
  • Fiber optic cables transmit light. Avoid looking directly into the end of a fiber optic cable when the system is powered on.
  • Always consult the Fanuc maintenance manual for specific safety precautions and procedures.
  • Use proper lockout/tagout procedures and ensure machine is in safe state
  • Use ESD precautions when handling servo amplifier boards
  • High voltages present in servo amplifier - qualified technicians only
  • Never look directly into fiber optic cable ends when system is powered
  • Be aware of pinch points and moving parts near servo amplifiers
  • Consult Fanuc maintenance manual for specific safety procedures
  • Be aware of the risk of electric shock when working with electrical components. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as insulated gloves and safety glasses.
  • Ensure proper ventilation when working in enclosed spaces to avoid exposure to fumes or dust.
  • Securely support any heavy components before removing them to prevent them from falling and causing injury.
  • Use caution when handling sharp objects or tools to avoid cuts or punctures.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down the system completely. Inspect all FSSB optical fiber cables between the CNC (JD1A/JD1B connectors on the main CPU board) and the servo amplifier (JD11/JD12 connectors). Look for visible damage, excessive bending (minimum bend radius is 30mm), or pinched cables.

Never look directly into optical fiber connectors as laser light can damage eyes.

  2. 2

Disconnect and clean all FSSB fiber optic connectors using lint-free cleaning swabs and optical-grade cleaning solution. Check for dust, oil, or contamination on the ferrule tips. Reseat all connectors firmly until they click into place.

  3. 3

Power on the system and immediately navigate to SYSTEM > DIAGNOSIS screen 202 (FSSB communication status). Check the ERR column for the axis mentioned in alarm 462. If ERR count increments, communication errors are ongoing.

  4. 4

If cleaning does not resolve the issue, replace the FSSB optical fiber cable between the CNC and first amplifier, and between amplifiers if daisy-chained. Use genuine Fanuc fiber cables with proper length (excessive length can cause signal degradation).

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Multiple amplifier swaps required
  • ·FSSB board replacement needed
  • ·Persistent errors after cable/connection verification

Prevention

  • Regular optical connector cleaning
  • Proper cable strain relief installation
  • Maintain minimum bend radius on fiber cables
  • Periodic FSSB connection inspection

Common Mistakes

  • Looking into fiber connectors
  • Forcing optical connectors
  • Ignoring cable bend radius limits
  • Not cleaning both connector ends
