Fanuc Alarm 157 - TOO MANY TOOL GROUPS

FANUC ALARM 157

The group setting command block count exceeded the maximum group count during tool life management data registration.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 157 occurs when the CNC attempts to register more tool groups in the Tool Life Management system than the maximum allowed group count. This happens during program execution when T-code group registration commands exceed the system's configured group capacity, typically controlled by parameters 6800-series.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to SYSTEM > PARAM and check parameter 6813 (maximum number of tool groups). Note the current setting - typical range is 4-32 groups depending on CNC model and option.

  2. 2

Access SYSTEM > CNC > TOOL LIFE and press the GROUP soft key to display current registered tool groups. Count total groups already registered in the tool life management table.

  3. 3

Review the part program for G10 L3 commands or tool group registration blocks. Count how many unique groups are being registered and verify this count plus existing groups does not exceed parameter 6813 value.

  4. 4

Either increase parameter 6813 within system limits (requires parameter write enable via parameter 3202#0=1) or reduce the number of tool groups in the program by consolidating tools into fewer groups.

Changing parameter 6813 requires CNC power cycle to take effect. Backup parameters before modification.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter backup/restore needed
  • ·SRAM battery replacement required
  • ·Persistent alarm after parameter reset

Prevention

  • Validate tool group count before program execution
  • Regularly backup tool life management data
  • Use consistent G10 L3 programming practices

Common Mistakes

  • Not power cycling after parameter changes
  • Exceeding group limits in subprograms
  • Forgetting to clear corrupted TLM data before reprogramming
