Access the SINUMERIK HMI main menu and navigate to Diagnostics > System Information > Software Version to verify the installed license package name and feature set.

Check machine data MD 5000 (Feature Selection) via HMI menu Maintenance > Machine Data or MDT to confirm grinding-only mode is active. A value containing 'GRIND' or bits 0-2 set to grinding-only indicates license restriction.

Contact Siemens licensing support with the machine serial number and current license ID to request a software upgrade or license extension that includes general tool management functionality.

Do not attempt to modify MD 5000 manually; this will cause system instability and void the warranty.

Navigate to the Tool Offset Table in HMI: Maintenance > Tool Management > Tool Data and verify the 'Tool Type' field of the selected tool. Only tool types 400-499 (grinding wheels, dressing tools) are permitted.

If a non-grinding tool (e.g., type 105 end mill, type 220 turning insert) must be used, confirm with machine setup documentation whether the system is truly a grinding machine or if a license mismatch exists.

If non-grinding tools are required, contact the machine tool builder to verify the correct software license should have been installed, and request software re-provisioning via Siemens Service.

In HMI Diagnostics > System Information, record both the NCK Software Version (check MD 6500) and HMI Software Version. They should match or be within one minor revision level.

If versions are mismatched, power-cycle the control and re-check. If mismatch persists, perform a software consistency check: HMI Maintenance > System > Software Update > Check for Inconsistencies.

Do not power-cycle during a consistency check operation.

If inconsistencies are detected, contact Siemens Field Service to reinstall the complete 840D software package (NCK + HMI) matching the purchased license specification for your machine configuration.
