Siemens 70018 - Channel Transformation was selected with non-referenced axes

Channel Transformation was selected with non-referenced axes

In order to guarantee proper operation of the transformation, the two linear axes involved in the transformation have to be referenced prior to selection of the transformation. This alarm is output at the first traversing movement after selection of the transformation Control reaction: NC Start disable in this channel. Alarm display. NC Stop on alarm.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 70018 fires when a kinematic transformation (TRAFO) is activated on the 840D control while one or both linear axes involved in the transformation have not completed machine reference point search. The transformation requires absolute axis positions to calculate correct tool offsets and workpiece coordinates, which are only available after axis referencing is complete.

Safety

  • Only qualified personnel should diagnose and clear control alarms; follow the machine builder's safety procedures and lockout/tagout where hardware work is required.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

In the NCK/PLC Menu, navigate to Axis > Reference and verify reference point search status for both axes involved in the transformation (typically X and Y for planar TRAFO). Check the axis display shows 'REF OK' status.

  2. 2

Execute manual axis referencing if required: use MDI mode and issue G code command G74 (reference point approach) or use the HMI Jog/Manual menu to drive each axis to its home switch and complete the reference sequence per MD 36010 (reference point approach direction).

Ensure workpiece is clear and machine is in safe state before referencing axes.

  3. 3

Verify transformation selection logic in the NC program. Remove any TRAFO activation (M code or G code) that occurs before G74 or reference completion. Restructure the program to execute G74 first, then allow cycle start to proceed with TRAFO selection.

  4. 4

Test the program flow in DRY RUN mode (via HMI Settings > Program Control) to confirm all axes reach REF OK status before the first transformation-dependent move command is executed.
