Siemens 840D 61522 - Channel block: Overlap >= current grinding wheel width

Channel block: Overlap >= current grinding wheel width

Siemens SINUMERIK alarm 61522: Channel block: Overlap >= current grinding wheel width. This alarm indicates a fault or error condition on the SINUMERIK 840D control. Refer to the Siemens SINUMERIK alarm documentation for the complete description and remedy.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 61522 occurs in CYCLE411 (grinding cycle) when the programmed overlap value exceeds the current grinding wheel width, causing invalid tool engagement geometry. The NCK cannot execute the grinding path because the overlap parameter would require the wheel to extend beyond its physical diameter, resulting in kinematic conflict.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access the CYCLE411 call in the NC program. Verify the overlap value being passed (usually in microns or mm depending on MD22200 unit setting). Cross-reference against actual grinding wheel width in the tool table (Tool Management > Geometry, T-offset or via Tool Carousel display).

Check MD22200 (basic length unit) to ensure overlap value is in correct units.

  2. 2

Reduce the _OVERLAP parameter to a value strictly less than the grinding wheel width. For example, if wheel width is 5mm, set overlap to maximum 4.8mm or less.

Setting overlap too close to wheel width may still trigger the >= condition; maintain safety margin of at least 0.1-0.2mm.

  3. 3

Verify the grinding wheel tool offset in the tool table matches the actual physical wheel width. Use Siemens HMI path: Machine > Tool Management > Tool Data > [Select Grinding Tool] > Geometry tab > check DL (tool length) or width parameter.

  4. 4

Reload the NC program and execute CYCLE411 again. Monitor NCK diagnostics (Diagnostics > Alarms > Archived) to confirm alarm 61522 no longer appears.
