Siemens 311717 - Axis drive SSI transmission timeout

Axis drive SSI transmission timeout

SSI transmission must be able to finish within one position control cycle. This is not possible with its current parameterization Control reaction: Mode group not ready. Channel not ready. NC Start disable in this channel. Interface signals are set. Alarm display. NC Stop on alarm.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 311717 indicates that the SSI (Synchronous Serial Interface) encoder communication cannot complete its data transmission within the position control cycle time (typically 3ms on 840D). This safety alarm occurs when the SSI protocol timing parameters are misconfigured relative to the NCK cycle, preventing reliable feedback acquisition for closed-loop axis control.

Safety

  • Drive/power/encoder circuit: hazardous voltages may remain in the DC link after power-off. Lock out / tag out, wait for discharge per the drive documentation, and use qualified personnel only.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to Diagnostics > Parameters > Axis Specific Parameters. Locate the affected axis in MD30160 (SSI_BAUD_RATE). Verify current setting; typical values are 38400 bps or 115200 bps. If set to 9600 or 19200 bps, this is likely the cause.

Do not change baud rate while machine is in AUTO mode or motion is active.

  2. 2

Check MD30161 (SSI_BIT_LENGTH) for the encoder; standard values are 24-bit or 25-bit. Confirm the encoder datasheet specifies transmission time at the current baud rate. Calculate: transmission_time = bit_length / baud_rate. Must be <3ms.

  3. 3

If transmission time exceeds cycle time, increase MD30160 to 115200 bps or higher (if encoder supports it). Verify encoder hardware supports the higher baud rate before parameter change.

Some legacy SSI encoders are limited to 38400 bps maximum.

  4. 4

After parameter adjustment, perform a cold restart (POWER_ON) and test axis motion. Monitor actual feedback update rate in Diagnostics > Process Data > Actual Position Feedback to confirm SSI updates occur within cycle.
