Siemens 840D 20130 - Channel contour tunnel monitoring

Channel contour tunnel monitoring

The tool tip has exited the tunnel placed around the desired contour, i.e. the distance between tool tip and desired contour was greater than specified in the MD 21050 CONTOUR_TUNNEL_TOL. The alarm can be reprogrammed in the MD ALARM_REACTION_CHAN_NOREADY (channel not ready).

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Common Causes

  • Tool offset or tool length compensation values are incorrect or not updated after tool change
  • Machine calibration drift or backlash causing actual tool position to deviate from programmed path
  • MD 21050 CONTOUR_TUNNEL_TOL tolerance value set too tight for the machine's capability
  • Servo tuning parameters degraded or axis following error exceeds acceptable limits
  • Program contains rapid movements or excessive feedrate causing tool to lag behind commanded contour

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Verify tool offset values in the tool table match physical tool measurements; perform tool touch-off procedure and update offsets if necessary
  2. 2Check current MD 21050 CONTOUR_TUNNEL_TOL value and compare against machine specifications; increase tolerance incrementally if machine cannot hold current specification
  3. 3Run a reference drive cycle (machine home) to clear any position drift and verify servo axis calibration
  4. 4Reduce programmed feedrate in the affected contour section and verify alarm clears; if successful, re-tune servo loop gains or check for mechanical wear
  5. 5Review NC program for excessive G0 rapid moves before contour; insert G1 feed moves or dwell commands to allow servo stabilization
