Siemens 840D 10761 - Channel block tool radius compensation for ellipse with more

Channel block tool radius compensation for ellipse with more

When machining the inside of an ellipse, in parts of the ellipse the curvature radii are greater than or smaller than the cutter radius compensation. In ellipses, in this case the block would be split up into 4 subblocks with curvature radii that are greater than and less than the compensation radiu

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Common Causes

  • Tool radius compensation value exceeds the minimum curvature radius of the ellipse geometry
  • Ellipse geometry has varying curvature radii that conflict with applied tool radius offset
  • Program attempts inside ellipse machining without accounting for curvature radius limitations
  • Tool diameter selected is too large for the smallest radius section of the ellipse path

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Verify the tool radius compensation value against the ellipse geometry; measure or calculate the minimum curvature radius of the ellipse and ensure tool radius is smaller
  2. 2Review the ellipse block definition in the NC program; check semi-major and semi-minor axis dimensions to confirm geometry validity
  3. 3Reduce the tool radius compensation value or select a smaller diameter tool that accommodates the ellipse curvature requirements
  4. 4If inside machining is required, consider splitting the ellipse into multiple passes or using a tool with smaller radius to maintain compensation stability
  5. 5Verify that the CNC control has the latest software version and that ellipse compensation is properly configured in the machine parameters
