Okuma OSP Alarm B 2138 - MCS DD encoder initialization failure

MCS DD encoder initialization failure

The MCS inverter could not complete the initialization handshake with the DD (direct drive) encoder over the encoder link. The axis or spindle named in the object cannot establish position feedback, so it cannot be operated. This alarm appears only on ICB-H systems.

Common Causes

  • Faulty DD encoder
  • Loose, damaged or mis-seated encoder link cable or connector
  • Defective inverter unit control board
  • Abnormal voltage at the encoder fuse (code XXYY=$FFFF indicates fuse voltage outside the 10.6–13.8 V normal range)

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code XX=0 = Error detected during reset; code XX=1 = Error during network address setting; code XX=2 = Error requesting basic communication information; code XX=3 = Error changing communication software version; code XX=4 = Error acquiring device information; code XX=5 = Error during parameter change; code XX=6 = Error at position detection start; code XX=7 = Error at AT mode start
  2. 2Note the full XXYYZZZZ code: XX is the initialization step where it failed (e.g. 4 = acquiring device information, 6 = position detection start), YY is the error type (0 = communication error, 6 = parameter error), and ZZZZ is supporting data.
  3. 3If XXYY shows $FFFF, the code is the encoder fuse voltage — check the encoder power supply; anything outside 10.6–13.8 V points to a power supply or wiring problem rather than the encoder itself.
  4. 4With power locked out, inspect and reseat the encoder link connectors at both the DD encoder and the inverter unit; check the cable for pinching, chafing or coolant ingress.
  5. 5If YY=5 (abnormal response code), cross-reference the data with MCS DD Encoder error alarm 1136 to identify the encoder-side fault.
  6. 6If YY=6 (parameter error), the ZZZZ value identifies the mismatch (e.g. 3 = multi-turn detection range over, 4/5/6 = incompatible protocol, data format or abbreviated mode) — suspect a mismatched or replaced encoder or control board.
  7. 7If cabling and connectors are good, substitute the DD encoder; replace the inverter unit control board only after encoder and cable are eliminated.
