HEIDENHAIN 23A-001B - Error in communication with device
This alarm is triggered when the TNC control loses cyclic data exchange with a specific device on the internal communication bus. The failure typically results from cable defects, module hardware failure, or power supply issues affecting the peripheral device's ability to maintain synchronous communication with the control.

Safety
Causes and Fixes
Identify affected device
Press MOD key, navigate to System > Configuration > Device Overview. Match the device number from %2 parameter to the physical module name and location in the cabinet.
Inspect cable routing and connections
Power down the control completely. Inspect cables to the identified device for pinch points, sharp bends (must have minimum 10x cable diameter bend radius), or proximity to power cables. Check connector locking mechanisms are fully engaged.
Always lock out main power and wait 5 minutes for DC bus discharge before handling cables in the cabinet.
Verify cable shield continuity
Using a multimeter, verify shield continuity from control end to device end (should be <1 ohm). Check that cable shields are properly bonded to the grounding rail at both ends with 360-degree clamps, not pigtails.
Swap with known-good cable
Replace the suspect cable with a new or verified Heidenhain cable of identical type and length. Never use field-fabricated cables for DRIVE-CLiQ or EnDat connections.
Keep a set of various length certified Heidenhain cables in your field service kit. Third-party cables often cause intermittent communication errors that are difficult to diagnose.
