HEIDENHAIN 23A-0019 - Error in communication with device

Error in communication with device

This TNC7/TNC 640 error indicates a communication failure with a connected device. Inverter (HFL): an error occurred at the interface the affected component ID number: the device, serial number: the unit The control cannot establish or maintain prope

Root Cause Summary

This alarm is triggered when the TNC control detects a timeout or protocol error in the cyclic communication exchange with a networked peripheral device. The communication stack in the PLC module monitors data exchange cycles, and when a configured device fails to respond within the expected timeframe, the control raises this alarm identifying the specific device. The root cause is typically physical layer (cabling/power) or network configuration issues rather than control hardware failure.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Identify affected device

Note the device name or number shown in the %2 parameter of the alarm. Cross-reference this with the machine's network topology diagram or MOD > System Configuration > Device List to locate the physical device.

The %2 parameter typically shows the device name as configured in the PLC program (e.g., 'Spindle_Drive', 'Tool_Magazine', 'MPG_Panel').

  2. 2

    Inspect physical connections

Check all cable connections between the TNC control's PLC module (typically X115 for ProfiNet) through any network switches to the affected device. Verify M12 and RJ45 connectors are fully seated and locking mechanisms engaged.

Power down peripheral devices before disconnecting/reconnecting network cables to prevent backplane damage.

  3. 3

    Verify cable continuity

Use a network cable tester or multimeter to verify continuity on all twisted pairs. For ProfiNet, confirm proper shielding continuity. Check for cable damage especially near cable carriers or moving machine components.

Heidenhain recommends Cat5e minimum for ProfiNet; Cat6 or industrial M12 X-coded cables for machine tool environments with high EMI.

  4. 4

    Check LED indicators

Observe the LED status on the TNC PLC module X115/X116 connector area and on the affected device's communication port. Green typically indicates link OK, flickering shows data activity, red/amber indicates fault. No LED activity confirms physical layer failure.

On TNC 640 controls, the PLC module LEDs are visible through the front panel access window without opening the cabinet.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·HFL inverter replacement required
  • ·Parameter backup/restore needed
  • ·Persistent communication errors after cable replacement

Prevention

  • Regular servo cable inspection
  • Maintain proper cable routing separation
  • Monitor HFL inverter status LEDs during routine maintenance
  • Keep servo parameter backups current

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring cable shield grounding requirements
  • Using non-Heidenhain approved servo cables
  • Incorrect servo device ID configuration
  • Mixing servo and power cables in same conduit
