Haas 200 - VD OVER TEMP. | Haas CNC Alarm

VD OVER TEMP.

This alarm indicates the spindle drive vector drive unit has detected an internal overtemperature condition on its power transistors or heat sink. The VD (Vector Drive) monitors thermal sensors and will fault out to protect the drive electronics from thermal damage. The spindle will immediately stop and cannot be restarted until the drive cools and the alarm is cleared.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 200 VD Over Temp occurs when the NTC thermal sensor on the vector drive's bridge rectifier reaches 90°C (194°F), indicating excessive heat buildup in the spindle drive electronics. This protective alarm prevents permanent damage to the vector drive components that control spindle motor current during high-load operations.

Safety

  • Program will not run

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power Down and Inspect Cooling Fan

Turn off main power and open the electrical cabinet. Locate the vector drive cooling fan and visually inspect for debris, oil buildup, or physical damage.

Ensure main power is OFF and LOTO procedures are followed before opening electrical cabinet.

  2. 2

    Clean Fan and Heat Sinks

Use compressed air to blow out debris from fan blades, heat sink fins, and air passages. Remove any oil or coolant residue with appropriate cleaning solvent.

Clean from inside-out to avoid pushing debris deeper into heat sink fins.

  3. 3

    Test Fan Operation

Power up machine and verify cooling fan spins freely and moves adequate airflow. Check fan power connections and replace fan if motor is seized or running slow.

  4. 4

    Monitor Drive Temperature

Run spindle at various speeds and monitor for alarm recurrence. Allow adequate cool-down time between tests to verify proper heat dissipation.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Vector drive component replacement needed
  • ·Spindle bearing replacement required
  • ·Electrical measurements show abnormal readings

Prevention

  • Maintain regular cleaning schedule for drive cooling fans and heat sinks
  • Monitor shop ambient temperature and maintain below 35°C
  • Use conservative spindle parameters during heavy cutting operations
  • Perform regular spindle lubrication maintenance

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual increase in alarm frequency
  • Running machine immediately after alarm without cool-down period
  • Blocking cabinet ventilation with storage or equipment
  • Using excessive spindle acceleration rates in programs
