SYST-017

Fanuc Robot SYST-017 - Single step operation effective

Single step operation effective

This is an informational message indicating that the controller is currently operating in single step mode, where program execution advances one line at a time only when the operator initiates each step. This mode is typically used for debugging or careful program verification and requires manual advancement via teach pendant. The robot will not execute continuous automatic operation until this mode is disabled.

Root Cause Summary

SYST-017 is an informational alarm indicating that Single Step mode is currently active on the R-30iA/R-30iB controller. This mode causes the robot to execute one program line at a time, pausing after each instruction until the operator manually advances to the next step. The alarm serves as a reminder that normal continuous program execution is not available until this mode is disabled.

Safety

  • Always verify robot is in a safe stopped state before entering the work envelope
  • Use T1 mode when testing after clearing servo or motion alarms

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check STEP indicator on teach pendant

Observe the teach pendant screen status bar. When single step mode is active, 'STEP' will be displayed in the upper status area. On newer iPendants, this appears as a dedicated STEP indicator icon near the mode/state display.

The STEP indicator remains visible across all teach pendant screens, making it easy to identify even when deep in menu structures.

  2. 2

Press STEP key to toggle off

Locate the physical STEP key on the teach pendant (typically on the right side button panel). Press once to toggle single step mode OFF. The STEP indicator should disappear from the status bar and the SYST-017 alarm will clear immediately.

Ensure the robot is in a safe position before disabling step mode, as the program may continue executing continuously once disabled.

  3. 3

    Verify alarm clearance

Press the RESET button or navigate to MENU > ALARM > [F5] RESET to clear the alarm history. Confirm SYST-017 no longer appears in the active alarm list.

If the alarm immediately returns after clearing, the STEP key may be stuck or there is a hardware fault with the teach pendant button.
