Fanuc Robot SYST-016 - ENBL signal is off
SYST-016 occurs when the ENBL (Enable) signal on UOP input UI[08] is not active, preventing robot operation. This is a safety interlock designed to ensure the external control system (PLC or operator panel) has authorized robot motion. The alarm triggers immediately when the controller detects the ENBL signal is off during a cycle start attempt or drops during operation.
Fanuc Robot SYST-016 - ENBL signal is off
ENBL signal is off
The ENBL (Enable) UOP signal is off. The robot cannot be cycled until the enable signal from the external PLC or operator panel is active.

Causes and Fixes
Check UI[08] ENBL signal status on teach pendant
Navigate to MENU > I/O > UOP Signal. Locate UI[08] (ENBL) and verify its status. The signal should show ON (highlighted) when enable is active. If OFF, the signal is not being received from the external controller.
You can also check this quickly by pressing FCTN > I/O > DI/DO and filtering for UOP signals. UI[08] should be green/ON when enabled.
Force UI[08] ON for diagnostic purposes
Navigate to MENU > I/O > UOP Signal, highlight UI[08], press F5 [FORCE]. Attempt to force the signal ON. If robot operates normally with forced signal, the issue is confirmed in the external controller not sending the signal. Remember to unforce after testing.
Only force signals for diagnostic purposes when safe to do so. Forcing bypasses safety interlocks - ensure all personnel are clear and machine is safe before forcing enable signals. Document any forced signals and remove forces after troubleshooting.
Verify PLC output status and logic
At the PLC, verify the output corresponding to robot ENBL is energized. Check PLC ladder logic for all conditions required for ENBL output: safety circuit closed, mode selection correct, E-stop released, all interlocks satisfied. Common conditions include door switches, light curtains, and system ready signals.
Many integrators use a 'robot ready' handshake where the PLC waits for a *IMSTP signal from the robot before sending ENBL. Check for circular logic where PLC waits for robot and vice versa.
Check PLC-to-robot communication and handshaking
Verify the PLC is receiving expected handshake signals from the robot controller (*IMSTP, SFSPD, CMDENBL on UO signals). If PLC logic requires these before sending ENBL, check MENU > I/O > UOP Signal for output status. Ensure robot mode switches and enable conditions are satisfied.
On R-30iA/B, *IMSTP (UO[07]) indicates not in E-stop. CMDENBL (UO[10]) indicates robot is ready to accept external enable. These often must be ON before PLC sends ENBL.
