Fanuc Alarm 5235 - COMMUNICATION ERROR

SYSTEM ALARM 5235

Fanuc alarm 5235: SYSTEM ALARM 5235. This alarm indicates a fault condition detected by the Fanuc control. Refer to the alarm number and name to identify the specific system or function involved.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc alarm 5235 COMMUNICATION ERROR indicates a breakdown in serial communication between CNC components, typically between the CNC unit and peripheral devices such as servo amplifiers, spindle amplifiers, or I/O Link modules. This alarm is triggered when the CNC detects loss of communication, corrupted data packets, or timeout conditions on the high-speed serial bus (FSSB, HSSB, or optical fiber connections).

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down the entire system. Inspect all fiber optic cables between CNC CPU board and servo/spindle amplifiers (α-series, β-series, or αi-series). Check for visible damage, tight connections at both ends, and proper seating in optical modules.

Ensure optical fiber connectors are clean and not bent beyond minimum bend radius (typically 30mm). Never look directly into fiber optic connectors.

  2. 2

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS screen > FSSB > Check channel status. On 0i/30i/31i systems, press SYSTEM key, then DIAGNOSIS soft key, then navigate to FSSB or SERVO tab to verify detected axes and amplifier communication status.

  3. 3

Check amplifier LED indicators. Alpha servo amplifiers should show steady green POWER LED and pulsing READY LED during normal operation. Red LED or no LEDs indicate power or communication failure.

  4. 4

Replace suspected fiber optic cables one at a time with known good spares. After replacement, power up system and verify communication re-establishes and alarm clears. Check FSSB diagnostics again for all axes detected.
