Fanuc 196 - Contour control data error

CONTOUR CONTROL DATA ERROR

Fanuc PS program alarm 196: CONTOUR CONTROL DATA ERROR. This alarm is triggered by an illegal or incorrectly formatted command in the part program, or a programming condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 196 occurs when the contour control (smooth AI or AI contour control) detects invalid programming data or incompatible move commands. This typically happens when G05.1 Q1 (AI contour control) or G08 P1 (smooth AI) is active and encounters arc commands, illegal axis combinations, or tolerance values outside acceptable limits.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the active program and locate the block number where alarm 196 occurred.

  2. 2

Search backwards from the alarm point to find G05.1 Q1 activation and verify if any G02 or G03 arc commands exist between activation and the alarm.

  3. 3

Remove arc commands or convert them to linear G01 moves with small segmentation, or deactivate contour control (G05.1 Q0) before arc blocks and reactivate afterward.

  4. 4

Reset the alarm, restart the program from a safe position, and verify smooth execution through the corrected section.

Ensure work offset and tool position are correct before restarting
