Fanuc Alarm 116 - WRITE PROTECTED VARIABLE

WRITE PROTECTED VARIABLE

Fanuc PS116: A macro program attempted to write to a system variable that is read-only. System variables like tool path data, position feedback, and machine status are protected from write access.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 116 occurs when a G31 skip function command is executed but the skip signal does not turn ON before the programmed move completes. This typically indicates a problem with the skip signal input circuit, wiring, probe connection, or parameter configuration for the skip function.

Safety

  • Probing incomplete

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS screen and locate the skip signal input page (usually DIAGNOSIS > PMC or DIAGNOSIS > I/O). Check the skip signal address assigned in Parameter 6200-6203 (G31 P1-P4 skip signal numbers). Verify the signal state changes when manually triggering the probe.

  2. 2

Inspect physical probe connections, battery level (for wireless probes), and cable continuity between probe receiver and CNC input module. Check input module LED indicators for the skip signal address.

Do not touch probe tip during testing to avoid accidental triggering or damage

  3. 3

Check PMC ladder logic (PMCLAD screen) to verify skip signal is properly routed from input (G address) to CNC interface (F address). Signal path must be continuous without blocking conditions.

  4. 4

Verify input module voltage specifications match probe output (12-24VDC typical). Check input signal polarity matches Parameter 3006 bit 6 (SKP signal polarity setting: 0=normally open, 1=normally closed).

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·PMC ladder modifications required
  • ·I/O board replacement needed
  • ·Probe calibration required

Prevention

  • Regular probe battery replacement
  • Periodic skip signal input testing
  • Proper cable strain relief installation

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to enable skip function in parameters
  • Incorrect signal polarity setting
  • Using G31 without axis movement
