Siemens 840D 6640 - NC card is not inserted

NC card is not inserted

Siemens SINUMERIK alarm 6640: NC card is not inserted. This alarm indicates a fault or error condition on the SINUMERIK 840D control. Refer to the Siemens SINUMERIK alarm documentation for the complete description and remedy.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 6640 occurs when the NCK (Numerical Control Kernel) cannot detect the NC card (Memory Card or CompactFlash) during system initialization or runtime. The NC card interfaces with the 840D control via the card reader port and is essential for storing part programs, tool data, and system backups. Physical disconnection or improper seating prevents the NCK from establishing communication with the card interface.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down the 840D control completely and wait 30 seconds for capacitive discharge.

Ensure emergency stop is activated before powering down.

  2. 2

Visually inspect the card reader slot on the front panel for obstruction, debris, or damage. Insert the NC card firmly into the slot until it clicks and is flush with the front panel.

Do not force the card; proper insertion should require moderate pressure only. Forcing may damage card contacts or reader pins.

  3. 3

Power up the 840D and observe the boot sequence. Check the Diagnosis menu path: Machine → Diagnosis → Card → Card Status to confirm card detection.

  4. 4

If alarm 6640 persists, test with a known-good NC card to rule out card reader hardware failure.
