Siemens 840D 61542 - Channel block: Incorrect grinding wheel reference point selected
Alarm 61542 is triggered when grinding cycles (CYCLE435, CYCLE441, CYCLE447) attempt to reference a tool D number that exceeds or equals the _GC_DNUM parameter boundary. This occurs because the NCK cannot locate valid grinding wheel geometry data within the tool offset table for the specified D number, causing the grinding wheel reference point initialization to fail.

Channel block: Incorrect grinding wheel reference point selected
Siemens SINUMERIK alarm 61542: Channel block: Incorrect grinding wheel reference point selected. This alarm indicates a fault or error condition on the SINUMERIK 840D control. Refer to the Siemens SINUMERIK alarm documentation for the complete description and remedy.
Root Cause Summary
Alarm 61542 is triggered when grinding cycles (CYCLE435, CYCLE441, CYCLE447) attempt to reference a tool D number that exceeds or equals the _GC_DNUM parameter boundary. This occurs because the NCK cannot locate valid grinding wheel geometry data within the tool offset table for the specified D number, causing the grinding wheel reference point initialization to fail.
Safety
Causes and Fixes
Navigate to Diagnostics > Parameters > Machine Data (MD) in the NCK menu and locate _GC_DNUM. Note the current maximum D number limit (typical range: MD 36200 area for grinding-specific parameters).
Review the active grinding cycle call in the part program (CYCLE435, CYCLE441, or CYCLE447) and extract the D number argument. Verify it is less than _GC_DNUM value.
If D number in program > _GC_DNUM, modify the program to use a compliant D number or increase _GC_DNUM via Service menu (requires appropriate access level).
Cross-reference the tool offset table (Diagnostics > Tool Management > Tool Offsets) to confirm the D number entry exists and contains valid grinding wheel geometry data (DL1, DL2, ACUT).
Empty or zero-filled D number entries will not provide a valid reference point.
Re-execute the grinding cycle after correcting the D number in the part program. Confirm alarm 61542 no longer appears.
