Siemens 840D 16792 - Channel block too many couplings for axis/spindle
Alarm 16792 occurs when a slave axis or spindle is configured with more than one master axis/spindle in the coupling definition, exceeding the maximum allowed master count. On SINUMERIK 840D, each slave can only be coupled to a single master; multiple master definitions violate the coupling hierarchy rules defined in the machine data.

Channel block too many couplings for axis/spindle
Siemens SINUMERIK 840D alarm 16792: Channel block too many couplings for axis/spindle. This alarm indicates a program or channel-level error on the SINUMERIK control. The part program or machine function cannot be executed as commanded.
Root Cause Summary
Alarm 16792 occurs when a slave axis or spindle is configured with more than one master axis/spindle in the coupling definition, exceeding the maximum allowed master count. On SINUMERIK 840D, each slave can only be coupled to a single master; multiple master definitions violate the coupling hierarchy rules defined in the machine data.
Safety
Causes and Fixes
Access Diagnostics > Parameters > Machine Data (MD) and navigate to the spindle/axis coupling section (MD20050-MD20059 for spindle couplings or MD35200-MD35299 for axis couplings).
Verify that the slave axis/spindle %3 referenced in the alarm has only ONE master defined. Check MD20051 (Master axis/spindle identification) contains a single valid axis/spindle number, not multiple entries.
If multiple masters are required, create separate sequential couplings (chain coupling) rather than parallel masters. Use distinct COUP_ID values and program COUPLE/DECOUPLE commands sequentially in the NC program.
Parallel master coupling is not supported; use cascaded couplings if multi-level synchronization is needed.
Reload machine data (Control Panel > Load Startup Defaults or cycle power) and verify the alarm clears when the block containing the over-coupled axis is re-executed.
