Siemens 840D 16757 - Channel block for following spindle coupling as leading

Channel block for following spindle coupling as leading

Siemens SINUMERIK 840D alarm 16757: Channel block for following spindle coupling as leading. This alarm indicates a program or channel-level error on the SINUMERIK control. The part program or machine function cannot be executed as commanded.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 16757 occurs when a COUPLE/UNCOUPLE command attempts to activate a following spindle/axis that is already serving as the leading spindle in an existing coupling. SINUMERIK does not support chained or nested couplings where one axis participates as both leader and follower simultaneously. This violates the spindle coupling hierarchy defined in the NC program or coupling parameter configuration.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the NC program logic around the COUPLE/UNCOUPLE commands. Identify all spindle variables referenced in consecutive COUPLE blocks. Check for any spindle that appears as a following spindle (second parameter) after previously being a leading spindle (first parameter).

Use block search (Ctrl+G) in the HMI program editor to locate all COUPLE and UNCOUPLE calls.

  2. 2

Verify the coupling state using Diagnostics > Spindle Couplings menu (path varies by HMI version: SIEMENS Operate or Sinumerik HMI). Document which spindles are currently coupled and their leader/follower roles.

  3. 3

Restructure the NC program to use a linear coupling sequence: uncouple the existing pair before attempting to couple a new pair involving any previously active spindle. Example: UNCOUPLE(S1,S3) before COUPLE(S3,S2).

  4. 4

Verify machine configuration parameter MD30200 (number of spindles) and MD30210 (spindle assignment) to ensure all referenced spindles are properly configured and active in the channel.
