Siemens 840D 16710 - Channel block axis master spindle not programmed

Channel block axis master spindle not programmed

Siemens SINUMERIK 840D alarm 16710: Channel block axis master spindle not programmed. This alarm indicates a program or channel-level error on the SINUMERIK control. The part program or machine function cannot be executed as commanded.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 16710 fires when a master spindle synchronization function (G33 thread cutting, G331 rigid tapping, G95 feed per revolution, or G96 constant surface speed) is invoked without specifying the master spindle speed (S parameter) or rotation direction (M3/M4/M5). The NCK cannot establish spindle master synchronization without these mandatory motion parameters.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the NC program block listed in the alarm (%2). Verify that an S parameter (spindle speed in RPM or SFM) is present in the same block or was set in a preceding preparatory block.

Check for S0 commands that may have disabled spindle speed; these are functionally equivalent to missing S parameters.

  2. 2

Confirm spindle enable status by checking MD 35100 (SpindleEnable) and verify the spindle is not inhibited via SD (setting data). Navigate to Diagnostics > Parameters > MD and search MD 35100.

  3. 3

Add or restore the S parameter in the offending block. Example: 'G33 S500 M3 Z100' for thread cutting at 500 RPM. Ensure S value matches the machine's spindle capability per machine data MD 35010 (SpindleMaxSpeed).

  4. 4

Reset the alarm (Delete/Clear Alarm), re-execute the corrected block, and monitor spindle speed feedback via Diagnostics > Spindle > Actual Speed display.
