Siemens 16673 - Block leading axis/spindle maximum number of CP master

Block leading axis/spindle maximum number of CP master

An attempt was made to activate more master values of generic couplings than are configured in MD18452 $MN_MM_NUM_CP_MODUL_LEAD Control reaction: NC not ready. NC Start disable in this channel. Interface signals are set. Alarm display. NC Stop on alarm.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 16673 fires when an NC program attempts to activate more master value couplings (CP) for a leading axis or spindle than are configured in MD18452 (Maximum Number of Coupling Points). This is a configuration mismatch between the machine data settings and the active coupling commands in the part program.

Safety

  • Spindle hazard: ensure the spindle is at standstill before working near it; follow lockout/tagout procedures.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access Siemens HMI menu: Diagnostics > Alarms > Search 16673 to confirm channel, block number, and leading axis/spindle name listed in the alarm.

  2. 2

Navigate to NCK Parameters menu and locate MD18452 (COUP_MAX_NUMBER_OF_CP). Document the current value—this is the limit that was exceeded.

  3. 3

Review the NC program block referenced in the alarm (Channel %1, Block %2) to count all active COUPLE or COUPLE_AR commands targeting the spindle or axis named in %3.

Use SINUMERIK Editor or the integrated program viewer to inspect the exact coupling commands in context.

  4. 4

Increase MD18452 to a value equal to or greater than the total number of coupling points required. Typical range is 1–4 per spindle. Recompile the program and retry.

Verify with machine OEM that increasing this parameter does not exceed NCK memory constraints or real-time performance budgets.
