Siemens 840D 104016 - No spindles available

No spindles available

Siemens SINUMERIK message 104016: No spindles available. This is an operator information message from the SINUMERIK control. Note the complete message text as it may contain important parameter values.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 104016 fires when the NCK kernel initializes and finds zero spindle axes configured in the machine data. This occurs during system startup or after a machine data reset when no spindle parameters (MD20050-MD20059 range) have been defined for any physical spindle.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access HMI Diagnostics > Machine Data menu. Navigate to Spindle Parameters section (MD20000-MD20999 range).

  2. 2

Check MD20050 'Number of Spindles' value. It must be set to ≥1. If 0 or blank, enter the quantity of spindles on your machine (typically 1 for single-spindle machines).

Do not exceed physical spindle hardware count or configured axis assignments.

  3. 3

Verify MD20051 through MD20059 contain valid spindle axis assignments (e.g., 'S' for main spindle). Each enabled spindle must reference a real axis defined in MD32000 (Axis List).

  4. 4

Execute 'Save & Reboot' from HMI System menu to write changes to NVRAM and restart NCK. Verify spindle availability on subsequent startup.

System will restart; ensure no active program is running.
