Siemens 840D 101603 - Low or high limit exceeded

Low or high limit exceeded

Siemens SINUMERIK operator message 101603: Low or high limit exceeded. This is an informational message from the SINUMERIK control indicating a system status or operation result that may require operator action.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 101603 occurs when a programmed value exceeds the permissible software limit switches or range defined in the machine data. This typically happens with axis positioning commands, feedrate values, spindle speeds, or other parameters that fall outside configured min/max boundaries. The alarm protects the machine from executing movements or commands that could cause collisions or damage.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check the alarm detail display to identify which axis triggered the alarm and note the commanded position value.

  2. 2

Review the active NC program line and verify the programmed coordinate against machine data MD36100 $MA_POS_LIMIT_PLUS and MD36110 $MA_POS_LIMIT_MINUS for the affected axis.

  3. 3

If the programmed position is correct and within physical travel, check if work offsets (G54-G59, G500-G599) or tool offsets are causing the final position to exceed limits.

  4. 4

Correct the NC program coordinates or adjust work offset values. If limits are incorrectly set, modify MD36100/MD36110 after verifying physical machine travel limits.

Never increase software limits beyond actual physical machine travel range. Risk of collision.
