603-02B1

HEIDENHAIN 603-02B1 - Recess cannot be machined with selected tool. Check RECESS and TOOL SELECTION.

Recess cannot be machined with selected tool. Check RECESS and TOOL SELECTION.

The selected tool cannot machine the defined recess. Either recess width is zero, or tool orientation does not match recess type.

Root Cause Summary

HEIDENHAIN alarm 603-02B1 occurs when there's a mismatch between the selected tool type and the recess machining operation, or when attempting to machine a recess with zero width. This alarm is triggered by the TNC control's validation of tool geometry parameters against the programmed recess dimensions and orientation.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check current tool selection

Press TOOL CALL key and verify the active tool number. Check tool table parameter P15 (tool type) - value 21-29 indicates axial tools.

Use MOD function to quickly access tool table and verify multiple tool parameters simultaneously.

  2. 2

    Verify recess cycle parameters

In the active recess cycle (typically CYCL DEF 252 or similar), check if the operation requires radial cutting based on recess orientation parameters.

Ensure machine is in STOP mode before modifying cycle parameters.

  3. 3

    Select appropriate radial cutting tool

Call a tool with P15 parameter set to 110-119 (milling tools) or verify tool has radial cutting edges defined in tool table parameters P8-P11.

Use TOOL DEF function to quickly verify tool cutting edge geometry before tool call.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Persistent alarm after tool table corrections
  • ·Cycle parameter validation errors continue
  • ·Suspected TNC software corruption

Prevention

  • Always verify tool type matches operation before cycle start
  • Use tool library templates for consistent tool definitions
  • Implement program validation routine checking Q parameter values
  • Document standard tool/cycle combinations for operators

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming all end mills can center cut
  • Forgetting to initialize Q parameters before cycle calls
  • Using generic tool definitions without geometry verification
  • Not updating tool table after physical tool changes
