Haas 186 - SPINDLE NOT TURNING | Haas CNC Alarm

SPINDLE NOT TURNING

This alarm is generated when the spindle drive reports that the spindle motor is not rotating despite a run command being active from the control. The IOCON board monitors spindle encoder feedback or drive status signals and faults when expected rotation is not detected within a timeout period. This protects against running a program with a non-functional spindle that could damage tooling or workpiece.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 186 fires when the NGC control detects that the spindle motor is not rotating despite receiving a run command. This typically occurs due to spindle drive faults, encoder feedback issues, or mechanical binding preventing rotation.

Safety

  • Do not force spindle

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Spindle Drive Status

Press CURRENT COMMANDS and verify spindle speed command is active. Check for drive fault LEDs on the spindle drive module in electrical cabinet.

Ensure machine is in E-STOP before opening electrical cabinet

  2. 2

    Verify Power Supply Voltages

Using multimeter, check DC bus voltage at spindle drive (typically 325VDC). Verify 24VDC control power is present at drive terminals.

Low DC bus voltage often indicates AC line issues or pre-charge resistor failure

  3. 3

    Test Drive Enable Signal

Check that spindle enable signal is reaching the drive from NGC control. Verify continuity on enable circuit and check for proper 24VDC signal.

Use DIAGNOSTICS > I/O to verify spindle enable output is active

  4. 4

    Reset Drive and Test

Power cycle machine to reset drive faults. If drive has manual reset button, press after clearing fault condition.

Do not repeatedly reset without identifying root cause

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Spindle bearing failure suspected
  • ·Motor winding failure confirmed
  • ·Drive module replacement needed
  • ·Encoder replacement required

Prevention

  • Regular spindle warm-up cycles
  • Proper tool holder maintenance
  • Keep spindle and drawbar clean
  • Monitor spindle load and avoid overloading
  • Regular encoder cable inspection

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual spindle performance degradation
  • Not checking simple mechanical binding first
  • Replacing expensive components without proper diagnosis
  • Forcing seized drawbar without proper tools
  • Not verifying encoder parameters after replacement
