Fanuc Robot PRIO-021 - Unknown I/O hardware
PRIO-021 Unknown I/O hardware alarm occurs when the R-30iA/R-30iB controller detects an I/O module on the I/O Link or process bus that does not match any configured device in the I/O configuration tables. This typically happens after physical I/O changes, configuration mismatches, firmware incompatibilities, or when I/O modules fail and present corrupted identification data to the controller.
Fanuc Robot PRIO-021 - Unknown I/O hardware
Unknown I/O hardware
An unrecognized I/O hardware device was detected on the I/O Link or process I/O bus. The controller does not recognize the type or configuration of the connected I/O hardware.

Causes and Fixes
Identify the unrecognized I/O module location
From the teach pendant, navigate to MENU > I/O > I/O Link to view the I/O Link scan results. Look for devices showing 'Unknown' or question marks. Note the rack position and slot number. The alarm detail screen may indicate the specific I/O Link address (e.g., Node 5, Slot 2).
Press the DETAIL soft key on the alarm screen to see the specific I/O Link node address and slot where the unknown hardware was detected.
Verify physical I/O module model number
Physically inspect the I/O module at the identified location. Record the complete Fanuc part number from the module label (format: A03B-xxxx-xxxx). Check if this module type is in the approved parts list for your controller software version. Common modules include AID16L (input), AOD16L (output), and AMD51 (DeviceNet Master).
Ensure proper ESD precautions before touching I/O modules. Disconnect power to the I/O rack if you need to reseat modules.
Add I/O module to configuration file
Navigate to MENU > I/O > I/O Link > CONFIG. Select the appropriate I/O Link channel (usually I/O Link 2). Choose ADD and select the module type from the list. Assign it to the correct rack and slot position matching the physical installation. Set the starting I/O address ensuring no overlap with existing I/O assignments.
The starting address should follow sequentially after the last configured module. For a 16-point input module, if the last input ends at UI[47], start the new module at UI[48].
Save configuration and cold start controller
After adding the module configuration, press F5 (FILE) and save the I/O configuration. From the main menu, go to MENU > SYSTEM > Master/Cal > Cold Start to reinitialize the I/O system. The controller will rescan the I/O Link and recognize the newly configured module. Verify the alarm clears after cold start completes.
Cold start will reset the controller and require a fault reset. Ensure the robot is in a safe position and all motion is stopped before initiating cold start.
